Greek-karpos-Turkish-karpuz

Greek-karpos-Turkish-karpuz

Interesting word karpuz = 🇹🇷watermelon

A word with an uncertain etymology:

German Wiktionary says:

wahrscheinlich im mykenischen ka-po bezeugt; zudem besteht vermutlich eine Verwandtschaft zu lateinisch carpere → la, althochdeutsch herbist → goh(neuhochdeutsch Herbst) und litauisch kerpti → lt[1][2]

(probably attested in the Mycenaean ka-po; there is also probably a relationship to Latin carpere → la, Old High German herbist → goh (New High German Herbst) and Lithuanian kerpti → lt[1][2])

Nisanyan points in addition to its possible Greek origin, 2 Turkish words out>

kar-buz (Kar: snow / buz: ice)

And he adds that the Armenian and Georgian words have similar etymology:

Armenian ձմերուկ karpuz < ձմեռ kış (winter)
Georgian საზამთრო karpuz < ზამთარი kış
*

They both have to do with winter like the Turkish
karpuz > kar (snow) + buz (ice)

*

Interesting?
