Harpasus-Arpacay-ArpaSuyu-too-many-coincidences

*

Arpaçay is the the name of an ancient river Harpasus/Arpasus (where some Scythian tribes dwell).

*

*

 Arpaçay means literally Barley River!

The Turkic name exists in a light different way in Central Asia near Issyk Köl. There is a river called Arpa Suyu (Barley Water/River) and it gives the region its name, too.

There was a Turkish tribe called ARPALI (the who have Arpa (Barley), or they who are from Arpa Region)) and they came to Kars region and gave their name.

There is a book about this tribe:

in www you can find this information about this district:

My tweet about this issue (23.08.2023):

Şu adlara bir bakın: Issık Köl'e dökülen bir çay var: Arpa Suyu Ayrıca bu bölgenin de adı. Oradan kalkan Arpalı Boyu, 16. yy'da Osmanlı arşivlerinde adı geçen Kars'taki bu bölgeye adını veriyor. Arpaçay adı da 1927 yılında resmileşiyor. Antik adı ne bu ırmağın? Harpasus!

Take a look at these names:

There is a river pouring into Issyk-Köl: Barley Water/River

It is also the name of this region.

Arpalı Tribe, who departed from there, gives his name to this region in Kars, which was mentioned in the Ottoman archives in the 16th century.

The name Arpaçay (Barley River) became official in 1927.

What is the ancient name of this river?

Harpasus (similar to Arpasu, isn't it?)!

I have already written about the word ARPA/BARLEY in this blog, because its is very interesting and I can follow it easily through the time:

Look at my short blogs:

Too many coincidences for me....

Summary: It is not impossible that Harpa-Su-S has something to do with Arpa-Suyu from Central Asia. It is compatible to my theses that many toponyms and hydronyms in this region are of Turkic origin.

For me:

Harpasus = Arpa Suyu (Arpa Çay).

The last but not least: There is a river with the same name in Caria:

*

Carian language has always been interesting anyway...

*

Arpa'ya gelince:

Arpa öyle basit bir sözcük değil. Taş gibi Altay kökenli/1-2 Macarcası árpa Hititçe'de benzer bir sözcük: harpas/3 Bi de yanlarına Etrüskçesini vereyim: alphazei (𐌉𐌄𐌆𐌀𐌘𐌋𐌀), Yunancası ἄλφιτον alphiton/4 Hepsi arpa. Hepsi.

*

And now to main word ARPA

ARPA is not such a simple word. Ice cold of Altai origin/1-2 Hungarian árpa A similar word in Hittite: harpas/3 Let me give them their Etruscan: alphazei ( 𐌉𐌄𐌆𐌀𐌘𐌋𐌀 ), Greek ἄλφιτον alphiton/4 It's all barley. All.
