Strabon Kairatos adlı kentin adını anar. Bu ad Knossos adlı Girit antik kentinin eski adıdır. Adını Kairatos ırmağından alır.

İlkin Kairatos ile başlarsak, benim gördüğüm ilk sözcük 'kayır' dır ve Eski Türkçe tuz bozkırı, kumsal, çakıl ve kum anlamları vardır. Eski Türkçe çoğul eki olan -t de sonuna geldi mi 'kumlar' anlamına gelir.

Strabon mentions the name of a city called Kairatos. This name is the old name of the ancient city of Crete called Knossos. It takes its name from the Kairatos River.

If we start with Kairatos, the first word I see is 'kayır' and it has the meanings of salt steppe, sandbank, gravel and sand in Old Turkish. When we add the Old Turkish plural suffix -t after it, it means then 'sands'.

As we learned from the source of the Kairatos River on Crete, this river is a river that carries sandstone and similar stones!

Altay bölgesinde Kayra ile başlayan çok ırmak ve yer adı vardır (örneğin Kayra-Baskan).

Aşağıdaki bağlantıda 'kayra' sözcüğünün kuzey/batı anlamında kullanıldığını görürüz. Bu da Kairatos Irmağı'nın akım yönüne uyar (bakınız yukarıdaki görsel, Kairatos'un S-N, yani güney-kuzey yönünde aktığını görürüz.

There are many river and place names starting with Kayra in the Altay region (for example Kayra-Baskan).

In the link below we see that the word 'kayra' is used in the sense of north/west. This also matches the flow direction of the Kairatos River (see the image above, we see that Kairatos flows in the S-N, i.e. south-north direction.

Sonuçta Türkçe Kayır sözcüğünün hem kum hem kuzey/batı anlamı bu Girit'teki antik ırmak ve kent adı ile %100 uyumludur.

Yeni adı Knossos'tur. Bu ad da beni uğraştırdı.

Kün özü olabilir, aydınlık pınar anlamında veya bir m~n değişmesi ile belki de kum-özü!

Ek bilgi: Birçok hidronimdeki -sso eki Yunanca bir ek değildir, Yunanca öncesi (Pre-Greek) bir ektir. Neden Türkçe bir ek olmasın?

After all, the Turkish word Kayır has both a sand and a north/west meaning that is 100% compatible with the name of this ancient river and city in Crete.

Its new name is Knossos. This name also made me interested.

It could be the essence of kün and özü, meaning a bright spring, or perhaps with a change of m~n, the spring of sand = kum-özü!

Suffix -sso in many hydronyms is not a Greek suffix but a Pre-Greek one. 

Why not a Türkic one?
