Mr. Pauly mentions a castle in Ancient Thrace called Denizos (Δένιζος).

There is no clear etymology because all the Western historians ignore the Türkic language.

Deniz/Dengiz/Tengiz means a lake, a sea or a swamp and is a very old word in Türkish languages in the history. There are noble people in Türkish history whose name was Tengiz, too. Tengiz could easily become Deniz/Teniz, because the 'ng' sound could easily lose its 'g".

Now if we don't ignore that information we can say there were people of Türkic origin among the Ancient Thracians. But not only among the Ancient Thracians but also among the Scythians and Dacians. Here below you can see other two Deniz among other peoples of the steppe:

Dacian name Diengis and Türkic Deniz

The third Deniz was the son of Attila and his name was Dengizik (the little lake, +ik in the end is diminutiv suffix). Here we can see easily that the older form Tengiz could easily change into Dengiz in European ears.

As a name of a castle it may have had this name because it was probably next to a lake or a swamp, or maybe the first commander's name was Deniz, we can not be sure.

The name of the Chinggis Khan is a derivation of the Türkish Deniz, too.

All this names are very compatible with Turkish onomastics and are nice names for male heros in the Great Steppe.
