Pliny wrote about a tribe called "Menobardi" in his Natural History (CHAP. 10.—THE RIVERS CYRUS AND ARAXES).
*A name whose origin is unknown.*
Till now!
*
First a little information:
The Menobardi were dwelling in the valleys adjoining to Armenia.
Pauly notices:
*
But nobody tried to explain their name.
*
My turn:
There was a king of the Türkic Khwarazmian Empire. His name was Dschalal ad-Dunja wa-d-Din Abu l-Musaffar Mengübirti. (جلال الدنيا والدين أبو المظفر منكبرتي).
Mengübirti/Mengüberti was his Türkish name (the rest was his Arabic name/nickname).
Notice that there was a ŋ (voiced velar nasal) in this name.(Meŋüberti would be the original).
*
Now we take this name apart.
Bengü/Mengü (a b ~ m change was never a Problem in Türkic) means simply eternal/immortal > religious meaning "the God".
Berti means "given" from the verb ber- meaning to give.
Now we have 2 compatible Türkic words that make sense together.
That could easily mean God-Given.
Like Theodore in Greek language .
*
I think this could be easily a tribe-name, too.
There we see that the Türks were existent there at the very latest years before 1. AD.
